Cruisin’ Reunion Route 66

CR66 2014Ontario, CA – Well, another successful year of Cruisin’ Reunion Route 66 is in the books and it could not have gone smoother. This was the second year of the event  held in old town Ontario California and on all levels the event surpassed last year’s great results.  There were more cars, more people, more vendors, more big name sponsors, LA TV news crews, the Goodyear blimp, network news helicopters, and the inaugural opening of the brand spanking new outdoor Ontario Town Center concert stage…lots of name brand bands like Little River Band and Otis Day were on hand (although the later has absolutely lost all semblance of a voice…it sounded like gravel in a trash can). There were cars on display that were seen last year as well as those not seen at this event before…crowd pleasers seemed to be a Dodge Challenger 4×4 (ouch!), a real military Humvee, a fire dept ladder truck from ground zero NY 911 where the Ontario FD crew were raising funds for MSD charities, and an Acadian Canso (find it the pictures by clicking link below). Autozone giveaways, Ford new car displays (you could register to win a new Mustang), free Lucas Oil tool box stickers, two beer gardens, and a smattering of local food vendors rounded out this year’s event. Weather was a PERFECT low-80’s daytime and high-60’s nights…just like the old days of late summer cruising E Street San Bernardino back in the 70’s. Looking forward to the 3rd annual event next year – mark your calendars for the 3rd week in September and plan to attend; you won’t regret it!

Collector Car Appreciation Day 2014

collector-car-appreciation-day

This is an interesting concept from the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Action Network (SAN) that has been around for 5 years and recently received congressional support.  It’s a “Collector Car Appreciation Day” and this year it will be celebrated on July 11, 2014. “The…annual event (is held) to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society” says SEMA.

Watch a cool video about the day here: Collectors Car Appreciation Day Video

Now, go to a car show this weekend to celebrate…and take the kids!!

Mad Dog Car Show 2014

29 Ford Model T RoadsterSouthlake, TX – A “classic car show” ad published in the local paper led to attending this car show where members from a local car club called Mad Dog Car Club put on a VERY cool event on a VERY hot and humid Saturday by displaying their antique, classic, and muscle cars.  Among the cars photographed was a rare black (of course!) ’29 Ford Model T Roadster, a subtle but highly “tech” modified metallic blue ’65 Ford Mustang, a ’70 Challenger SE sporting Plum Crazy paint, and light yellow ’67 Chevy Camaro SS.  Although the event was scheduled for 3 hours, many members had to leave about one hour early as the combination of mid-90F temps and mid-90% humidity in a hot cement parking lot took its toll. The Mad Dog Car Club does not have regular meetings but rather handles its events strictly via email notifications…kinda of a neat idea for busy folks who want to show off their cars on the weekends but do not have time during the week for meetings…

50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang

50th Anniversary Mustang NCEDUnless you have been living in a vacuum this year, you know that 2014 has brought two major milestones to the American automobile scene: 1) 50th anniversary of the all powerful Chrysler Hemi engine and 2) 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang muscle car!

Recently, the Mustang Club of America (MCA) organized a country wide tour for Mustang owners which drew participants not just from the US but also abroad from places like Australia, New Zealand, and more!

We were pleasantly surprised recently when visiting Norman Oklahoma for the annual University of Oklahoma (OU) Spring Football Game (our money goes there to educate our very own business / energy major who also happens to a member of the OU Pride marching band). When we pulled into our “normal” hotel of choice in the Norman area, we spied a huge parking lot full of Mustangs on the premises (we stay at the US Postal Service National Center for Employee Development or “NCED” which is subcontracted to Marriot hotels to fill rooms when the center is not in full use by USPS to save tax dollars). We soon learned that we had coincidentally booked our room at one of several hotels in Norman hosting the national gathering and jumping off points for the 50th anniversary MCA Club tour across the US to celebrate this historic event.  Participants drove in from Florida to Washington to meet in Norman before splitting into two tour groups – one headed west to Las Vegas and the other east to Charlotte.  We had a great time “talking cars” with the Mustang owners who were very willing to share their car stories…these were hard core enthusiasts who took several weeks from their daily lives to drive this tour!  We took photos of some of the rarest Mustangs on the planet and these were not just plastic wrapped “garage cars” but driven to Norman for the pure pleasure of meeting with other like-minded car nuts!  See the photos here:

Upon return to Texas, we attended the local Ford dealer 50th anniversary car show at Sam Pack Five Star Ford in North Richland Hills, TX.  The dealership owner has an amazing collection of Fords and brought many of his rarest Mustangs to Five Star for display along side the many local cars attending this event.  See photos here:

Finally, Formula Drift driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. attended the Ford Mustang’s 50th tour celebrations at both Las Vegas and Charlotte, NC to show off his driving skills.  See a video recap of Gittin’s visit to the tours here:

2014 Riverside Show N Go Charity Car Show

Riverside, CA – This was the second year of attending the annual Riverside Show N Go charity car show and it continues to be amazing!  Per the RSNG website, “since 1999, the Riverside East Rotary Club partnered with the Old Farts Racing Team, Southern Ca, to provide classic automobile enthusiast with a venue to showcase their restored cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Delivering 15 shows since it’s inception, all efforts have been in the name of charity to serve the Community of Riverside”.  In those years,  they have raised over $300K and donated the proceeds to local charities!

A group of us high school buddies pick a couple of car shows per year to attend together and come from various cities / states to participate in the events by using the RHE Dodge Charger and its offspring Dodge Demon for the activities.  Aside from meeting Chip Foose from Overhaulin’, the modern Batmobile, Back to the Future DeLorean replica, Bumblebee Camaro, Dodge Super Bee (the real “Bee”), Pink Panther Challenger, A-Body ‘Cuda, and Hemi Roda Runner all took their place among hundreds of other classic and muscle cars in the warm Southern California sunshine.  The venue could not have been better as the downtown Riverside area around Market, University (UCR), and Mission Inn Streets has improved with renovations each year…a truly amazing restored downtown walking area next to the historic Mission Inn to show / cruise the restored / restified classics cars of our past!  Enjoy all the photos at this link:

Pate Swap Meet at TMS 2014

Fort Worth, TX – As stated in their web site, “…the Pate Swap Meet is the largest swap meet in the midwestern United States. This is our 42nd year of annual events. The widely attended Pate Swap Meet is a leading collector’s choice for its diversity of auto and motorcycle related products offered by vendors from across the country. The four day event is host to everything automobile, motorcycle, and transportation related with a vast array of items including parts, accessories, automobilia, street rods, antique and collector cars along with many hard-to-find and vintage items”.  I could not have describe this event any better!

Pate SwapThere was such a wide variety of parts, collectibles, project cars, and all things “cars stuff” it was overwhelming!  We spent the better part of the afternoon in the paved parking lot of Texas Motor Speedway where this event was held – this lot is reported to be the largest paved parking lot in Texas and perhaps in the country!  That is a lot of ground to cover and it was impossible to do so…I’m sure we missed many awesome parts and projects as we did not traverse the whole event in an afternoon. We did, however, run across some cool vintage signs, a bonafide ’29 Chrysler hot rod project car (Fords and Chevys are the norm for the 20’s and 30’s hot rod projects), an early 60’s Ford Ranchero (my dad had the wagon version of this aka Falcon), a ’55 two tone project car painted and ready for engine, a 3-wheel ATV (we used to have these), and even a Ford Pinto (that had not exploded from the gas tank issue that demised these cool V8 conversion project cars a few decades ago).

2014 Connor’s Car Show

Keller, TX – We recently came across a really amazing local car show that combines the love of old cars with the desire to help others.  Raising money for Down Syndrome efforts, this car show fundraiser donated all proceeds to the Down Syndrome Partnership and Cook Children’s Medical Center.  Way to go folks!

Good Guys 21st Lone Star Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway

Good Guys 2013 CoverFort Worth, TX – Another awesome shows of vintage autos was on display at Texas Motor Speedway this past weekend.  There was a wide variety of classic cars from muscle to rat rods, low riders to fat boys, finished projects to project cars for sale, and much more!  I even found a 1970 Challenger RT440 6-pak car for sale (it needed work and I snap a photo of the VIN for all you Mopar decoders out there to verify if this is a true Challenger RT 440 6-pak or a clone)!

Latest updates on alt-R66 event in Ontario California…start making plans as it looks like it is really going to happen!

Way cool idea to offer first 660 (get it? this number is a play on Route 66) registrants the best parking spots on Euclid Avenue in Ontario…it is a wide road with curbed and landscaped center median.

Re-post from their official site below:

ONTARIO’S ROUTE 66 CRUISIN’ REUNION® OFFERS ‘GOLDEN TICKET’ PARKING FOR FIRST 660 REGISTERED VEHICLES

Thousands of Classic Cars and Fans will Line Historic Euclid Avenue September 20-22, 2013.

Route 66 Cruisin’ Reunion® officials are excited to announce the creation of a ‘golden ticket’ exclusive parking promotion* for the first 660 car owners that register their classic autos for the September 20th -22nd event in Ontario, California. By registering first each ‘golden ticket’ will enable those car owners to park their vintage rides in one of the coveted spots along Euclid Avenue for the three day rally.

“We are pleased to announce our ‘golden ticket’ promotion for the Route 66 Cruisin’ Reunion to car owners for what we know will become one of the West Coast’s premier Vintage Metal Roadshows,” stated Michael Krouse, president of the nonprofit Route 66 Reunion and President & CEO of the Greater Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The Route 66 Cruisin’ Reunion’s ‘golden ticket’ campaign is a great opportunity for owners to show-off their vehicles in a premier location as a ‘golden ticket’ allows the first 660 approved registered car owners to park their custom classic cars along tree-lined Euclid Avenue.“

Car owners interested in the ‘golden ticket’ promotion should get their vehicle entry forms in fast as we expect this to be a sellout. If you do not have an entry form, you can download one from the website at www.Route66CruisinReunion.com, or request a registration form by emailing Registration@Route66CruisinReunion.com or by dialing (800) 867-8366 or (909) 891-1151.

* Please note: The ‘golden tickets’ are not considered reserved parking and the spaces will not be numbered. This is still considered open parking, but each car owner will be given a different registration that will allow them to park along Euclid Avenue from Holt Blvd. to “G” Street. Only those cars with a colored registration card numbered 0001 – 0660 will be allowed to park on Euclid Avenue.

The Route 66 Cruisin’ Reunion will feature three days of classic cars, cruising, contests, live entertainment, fabulous food and revelry to make it one of the nation’s most extended, long-play events of its kind. Vintage autos and car hobbyists will line Ontario’s tree-shaded Euclid Avenue and take part in a Poker Run rally incorporating the much loved classic Route 66.
